The task
Many parents want to tell a bedtime story themselves rather than read one off a screen, but by evening there are no ideas left. I wanted a prompt you glance at for a minute, then put the phone down and tell the story in your own words, with your child and your family in it.
Role
Idea, design, development, stories, Google Play release, App Store submission
What I did
- Design and development: each story is a card with one paragraph of vivid details and a spine of four words to hold the plot. The names of the child and the family go into the text, in Ukrainian in the right grammatical case.
- A night mode: once the phone is put down, the screen dims and only the four words stay, glowing like an ember, so the light doesn’t keep the child awake.
- A deck of 140 stories in Ukrainian and English and 148 in German, with a winter deck and folk tales retold in my own words. Scripts check that every language has the whole deck and that the names fit the grammar.
- Your town in the story: for any city in the world the app finds a few well-known places in OpenStreetMap and Wikidata. A family chronicle keeps the stories you told with a thread for tomorrow, and an evening reminder.
- One web app inside native shells for iPhone (Swift) and Android (Kotlin). It works offline, with no account: names and stories stay on the phone. A one-time purchase for the whole deck, a landing page in three languages and everything for both stores.
